about

1974 (that's how it was in those days) is a spoken word track that takes us on an evocative, nostalgic trip down memory lane back to 1974 on the number 16 bus. Musically it’s a gentle harmonic melody, twinkling and gently moving the track along, not seeking to distract from the lyricism but rather to subtly compliment them.

Written by Musician, songwriter, producer and music blogger Platinum Mind aka Del Osei-Owusu a south Londoner with a deep love for music, and Marina Florance a singer songwriter now living in Norfolk, with a love for music, storytelling and poetry.

How did this collaboration come about...

The pair came together when they met as moderators for Tom Robinson’s music blog Fresh On The Net. They first started working together on music in 2020 for the track “Live Life Lovin’”. Since then they’ve written a number of songs that have been played on local and international stations.
Del says: "I originally played around with a guitar idea, and thought it would be something that Marina would find a lot of fun. I sent her the bare bones of the idea, and she said she wanted to do something different to what we’ve done previously. Being a Londoner she decided to approach it with spoken word, and told a story of a bus ride she used to take in London in 1974. This is quite an important year as my mum moved to the UK then too, and has memories of it. Marina wouldn’t have known that but it felt like a meta moment for me."

‘1974’ is already gaining legs for the duo having been picked up and played on BBC6 Music Radio by Mary Anne Hobbs and Tom Robinson and has received further praise from:

"this is incredibly special,it's one of my favourite things I've ever heard"
Jenn Crothers - Boogaloo Radio

“It's a lovely piece” - Stradbroke Radio

“Well that was excellent, really works as a spoken word , well done” - Roots and Fusion

“Really like that, it works well” - Along The Tracks

“Sounds great” - Cambridge 105 fm

lyrics

Waiting for the bus
the number 16
Cricklewood Broadway
to Edgware Road
I have no idea when it's coming
because it's 1974
with only the bus stop timetable
to give me a clue
that's how it was in those days
we just waitied
if it came it came
if it didn't
we walked
often they came in pairs
hold tight please
ding ding
we're on our way
wait a minute
there's a bloke
running
he grabs the pole
jumps on
smiles
that's how it was in those days

mostly I sat upstairs
I don't know why
once I sat downstairs
someone was rude to me
on the otherhand
things happened upstairs too
still, that's where I sat
you could smoke upstairs
that's how it was in those days
fares please
the conductor called
as he moved around the bus
I loved the ticket machine
worn like an oversized necklace
clicking and clunking
dispensing curved tickets
all off a roll
that occassionally
ran out
combined with
the leather money bag
a perfect match
change given
that's how it was in those days
