about

The Dress is from the EP/Artists Book My own little piece of the sky, it was recorded live with 4 other tracks in the same evening at Norwich Puppet Theatre. all tracks written by: Florance/Fox Allen.
Recently picked at Fresh On The Net in Batch 87 Reviewed by Fresh Favs James Robins, he said
"The Dress is a beautifully haunting, campfire tale of a song, which flickers like a flame, casting shadowy laments of the past. That it was recorded live in a puppet theatre is not only hugely impressive but also augments the dark and dreamy sensibility of the music. You can almost imagine apparitional marionettes acting out the vivid pictures painted by the lyrics; of the love, loss and woe all bound up in the memories of a cherished object..."

lyrics

The Dress (Fox Allen/Florance)

she kept it in the bottom draw
of the chest beside the bedroom door
wrapped in tissue of the purest white
on a bed of ancient oak it laid,
the dress that her grandmother had made
each stitch a link into the past

the colour of emerald green
it would have been a child's dream
with buttons that shone like stars at night
the green it spoke of open fields
of trickling streams and summers yield
of walking long amongst the creaking trees

the wooden gate the old stone floor
the path that led to the kitchen door
a garden filled with a heady scent
and in that dress there was more love
than she would ever know
in that dress were memories of one she'd barely known

all this she kept and so much more
in the chest beside the bedroom door
a secret life only she would know

Instrumental

she kept it in the bottom draw
of the chest beside the bedroom door
wrapped in tissue of the purest white
